A Bible Study on John 1:1–14 by RJBoatman Revival Ministries
Scripture
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” — John 1:1 (NIV)
Introduction: A Voice From the Beginning
Before there was light, time, or human history — there was the Word. The Apostle John doesn’t begin his Gospel with a manger, but with eternity. He reaches beyond Bethlehem to declare a breathtaking truth: the Word who was with God and is God, is Jesus Christ.
This study will walk you through who the Word is, what He came to do, and why it matters now more than ever.
1. The Eternal Word
John 1:1–2
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning.”
The term Word (Greek: Logos) carries weight. In ancient Jewish thought, it reflected divine action — God spoke, and the world came into being. In Greek philosophy, Logos meant reason and order. John unites both ideas and reveals the Word as a Person — eternal, co-existent with God, and Himself fully divine.
This isn’t poetic metaphor. Jesus wasn’t created — He is the uncreated One. When Genesis says, “In the beginning, God…”, John completes the picture: “In the beginning was the Word.”
2. The Word Is the Creator
John 1:3
“Through Him all things were made; without Him nothing was made that has been made.”
Colossians 1:16
“For in Him all things were created… all things have been created through Him and for Him.”
Jesus isn’t a spectator in creation — He’s the source. Every galaxy, atom, and breath you take originated through Him. And because He is Creator, He holds authority over all. This includes your life, your future, your eternity.
3. The Word Became Flesh
John 1:14
“The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the one and only Son… full of grace and truth.”
Here is the miracle of the Incarnation: the eternal Word didn’t send a message — He became the message. Jesus put on human skin, walked among us, felt our pain, faced our temptations, and loved us to the cross. He revealed divine truth wrapped in human tenderness.
He is not a distant deity; He’s a personal Savior.
4. The Word Reveals the Father
John 1:18
“No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is Himself God… has made Him known.”
Jesus is not simply God’s representative — He is the visible image of the invisible God. Want to know how God thinks? Study Jesus. Want to know how God loves? Seek Jesus. Want to know what God would say? Listen to Jesus.
He is the clearest revelation of heaven to earth.
5. What Do We Do With This Word?
John 1:12
“Yet to all who did receive Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God.”
The story demands a response. This isn’t information — it’s an invitation.
Altar Call: Come to the Word of Life
If you’ve never placed your trust in Jesus Christ, today can be the beginning of new life. The same Word who was with God at the beginning is standing at the door of your heart, waiting for you to open it.
You don’t need to fix yourself first. You don’t need all the answers. You just need to believe.
Pray this from your heart:
“Jesus, I believe You are the Word made flesh. I confess my sin and my need for You. I believe You died and rose again to give me eternal life. I invite You into my heart. Be my Savior. Be my Lord. Be my everything. Amen.”
If you prayed this sincerely, you’ve just been adopted into the family of God. His Spirit will now begin shaping you from the inside out.
Commissioning: Believer, Speak the Word
If you already know Jesus as the Word made flesh, then you are His voice to the world.
Romans 10:14
“How can they hear without someone preaching to them?”
The same Jesus who spoke galaxies into motion now speaks through you. In your kindness, in your testimony, in your courage to speak His name — you carry the Word.
Here’s your call:
Share the Gospel with boldness.
Live the Gospel with integrity.
Love with the same grace and truth Jesus has shown you.
Someone is waiting to hear the Word — and they may only hear it through your voice.
Closing Declaration
“Jesus, You are the eternal Word who was with God and is God. You created all things, became flesh for me, and revealed the heart of the Father. I believe in You, and I commit to make You known. Speak through me so that the world may hear, see, and believe. Amen.”
