Romans 6:23 says: “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

God’s Word teaches that Christians should not sin, even though our sins are forgiven by His grace.

However, God’s saving grace is not permission to continue living in sin.

Romans 3:23 states, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Notice, it says “have sinned,” not that we must continue sinning.

2 Corinthians 5:17 declares, “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”

When we accept Christ’s gift of salvation, God gives us the power to overcome sin. While we are still capable of sinning, God’s Spirit within us empowers us to choose righteousness. By honoring the life of Christ in us, we break free from the chains of sin and no longer live in bondage. We allow God’s daily and eternal saving grace to fuel our obedience.

As we turn away from sin, we remove the barriers to receiving God’s blessings — His greatest peace, joy, love, health, and provision.

One of the most effective ways to combat temptation is by focusing on Jesus. When temptation arises, fix your eyes on Him, call His name, quote Scripture, or sing your favorite hymn.

My personal favorite for overcoming temptation is this wonderful chorus written in 1922: “Turn your eyes upon Jesus, look full in His wonderful face, and the things of this earth (temptations) will grow strangely dim in the light of His glory and grace.” Because, when we are focused on Christ and calling on His name, it becomes impossible to sin.

We encourage you to embrace the power God has given you to break free from sin and live a life of freedom, blessings, and joy in Christ.
