RJBRM Bible Study: It Is Finished - Understanding the Depth and Power of the Final Words of Christ

Key Scripture: “When Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, ‘It is finished,’ and He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.” – John 19:30

Introduction: The Power of “It Is Finished”

Jesus’ final words on the Cross, “ Tetelestai” — meaning “It is finished,” are not just a declaration of His death, but a profound statement of victory, fulfillment, and transformation.

The Greek word tetelestai, rich with layers of meaning, reveals the culmination of God’s redemptive work.

This Bible study will explore four key aspects of tetelestai and their significance for our lives today.

I. The Mission Accomplished: Fulfillment of God’s Will

Key Scripture: “I have glorified You on the earth. I have finished the work which You have given Me to do.” – John 17:4

Reflection:

 •   Jesus’ cry of tetelestai signifies His obedience to the Father’s will. His mission (to bring salvation to mankind) was fully completed.

•   Just as a servant would report back to his master, “The mission is accomplished,” Jesus declared His victory to the universe.

Discussion Questions

1. What does Jesus’ faithfulness to His mission teach us about obedience and perseverance in our calling?

2. How does this inspire us to trust God with the challenges we face?

II. The Perfect Sacrifice: The End of Sin’s Power

Key Scripture: “But He, having offered one sacrifice for sins for all time, sat down at the right hand of God.” – Hebrews 10:12

Reflection:

•   Jesus fulfilled the role of both the High Priest and the sacrificial Lamb. Unlike the annual sacrifices of the Old Covenant, His sacrifice was perfect and permanent.

•   With His blood, He entered the Holy Place once for all, securing eternal redemption (Hebrews 9:12).

Discussion Questions:

1. How does knowing that Jesus’ sacrifice is final and complete, give you assurance of salvation?

2. Why is it significant that Jesus was both the Priest and the Sacrifice?

III. The Debt Paid in Full: Freedom from Sin

Key Scripture: “In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace.” – Ephesians 1:7

Reflection:

•   In the ancient business world, tetelestai was stamped on a document to show that a debt had been paid in full. Jesus’ declaration means the debt of our sin has been completely canceled.

•   Through His sacrifice, we are not only forgiven but also freed from the bondage of sin.

Discussion Questions:

1. How does the idea of your debt being “paid in full” affect your relationship with God?

2. How can we live in the freedom that Jesus’ sacrifice provides?

IV. A New Beginning: The Dawn of the New Covenant

Key Scripture: “For this reason He is the mediator of a new covenant, so that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance.” – Hebrews 9:15

Reflection:

•   Tetelestai marks a turning point in history. The Old Covenant, based on the Law, ended, and the New Covenant, based on grace through faith, began.

•   This new era invites all believers to experience an intimate relationship with God, made possible by Christ’s finished work.

Discussion Questions:

1. How does the New Covenant change the way we relate to God?

2. What does living under grace mean for your daily life?

Application: Living in the Victory of the Cross

1. Rest in the Finished Work: Stop striving for salvation or God’s approval, for it has already been accomplished.

2. Walk in Freedom: Live as someone whose debt has been fully paid. Reject guilt and shame.

3. Share the Good News: Proclaim the victory of Jesus to others, inviting them into the new life He offers.

Closing Prayer

Father, thank You for the finished work of Jesus on the Cross. Help us to fully understand and embrace the victory, freedom, and new life that His sacrifice has secured for us. Teach us to live in obedience, freedom, and gratitude, proclaiming Your love and grace to the world. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
