Main Scriptures

“But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that its desolation has come near.” (Luke 21:20)

“Be dressed ready for service and keep your lamps burning, like servants waiting for their master to return from a wedding banquet, so that when he comes and knocks they can immediately open the door for him. It will be good for those servants whose master finds them watching when he comes. Truly I tell you, he will dress himself to serve, will have them recline at the table and will come and wait on them. It will be good for those servants whose master finds them ready, even if he comes in the middle of the night or toward daybreak. But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into. You also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.” (Luke 12:35-40)

Lesson Narrative

In Luke 21:20 , Jesus warns His disciples of the coming destruction of Jerusalem, which took place in A.D. 70 when the Roman armies besieged the city.

This prophecy is significant not only for its historical fulfillment but also for its prophetic meaning in relation to future events, especially those concerning the end times.

Jesus highlights this desolation as a sign, not merely to forewarn, but to remind us that God’s plans are unfolding as He has determined.

The devastation of Jerusalem reminds us that there are moments in history when God’s judgment and sovereignty are powerfully displayed.

This lesson goes beyond just a historical event — it challenges believers to recognize the spiritual and physical signs around us today, understand God’s timing, and prepare ourselves for His return.

Just as the fall of Jerusalem was imminent, so too will be the events surrounding Christ’s second coming. We are called to be watchful, discerning the signs of the times, and ensuring our lives reflect readiness for His return.

Additional Biblical References

(2 Peter 3:10) Peter reminds us of the suddenness with which the Day of the Lord will come, calling believers to live holy and godly lives in anticipation.

(1 Thessalonians 5:2-6) Paul speaks of the Lord’s return like a thief in the night, exhorting believers to stay awake and alert, always ready for His coming.

(Revelation 19:11-16) A vision of Christ’s triumphant return, where justice and desolation come upon those who oppose His reign.

Action Items

Spiritual Discernment: Spend time in prayer and study, asking God to give you discernment to understand the signs of the times. Reflect on areas where you might need to adjust your life in light of Christ’s imminent return.

Living Ready: Evaluate your daily actions and decisions — are you living in a way that reflects your anticipation of Christ’s return? Commit to practices of holiness and godliness, as described in 2 Peter 3:10-11.

Sharing the Message: Like the disciples were warned about Jerusalem’s coming desolation, share the message of Christ’s return with others. Think of one person this week to whom you can explain the importance of being prepared for Christ’s second coming.

Seeking Refuge in Christ: Just as Jesus advised those in Jerusalem to flee to safety, consider where you are seeking refuge in your spiritual life. Are you turning to worldly solutions, or are you trusting in Christ as your strong tower? (Proverbs 18:10)

Conclusion

The desolation of Jerusalem stands as a stark reminder that God’s words will be fulfilled. As we witness the unfolding of  current events, we must be diligent in our faith, knowing that the ultimate return of Christ is certain. Let us live in readiness, sharing the urgency of His message, and trusting fully in His sovereignty over all things.
