Why Does the Shepherd Anoint His Sheep?

• Protection from Harm: Flies and parasites could torment sheep, even laying eggs near their eyes or noses, causing irritation and infection. The oil acted as a natural repellent, keeping pests away and allowing the sheep to graze peacefully.
• Healing Wounds: Sheep often encountered thorns, sharp rocks, or rough terrain that left them with cuts and abrasions. The shepherd’s oil was a soothing balm, bringing healing and preventing infection.
• A Sign of Care and Blessing: The act of anointing symbolized the shepherd’s deep care for his flock, ensuring their safety, comfort, and well-being.
Just as a shepherd anoints his sheep to guard and protect them, God longs to anoint you every day with His divine presence. This sacred blessing offers spiritual protection, healing, and peace in a world full of challenges and uncertainty.
As Psalm 23:5 Reads: “You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.”
